Petition: A fairer immigration system

The housing and cost of living crisis is caused by corporate greed, and the major parties are trying to blame immigrants as a distraction. But Australia's immigration system is already one of the strictest in the world.

Families who wish to reunite with loved ones face difficult challenges when applying for partner visas, visitor visas, student visas and other family reunion visa classes. Visa fees are too high, processing times are too slow, and many applicants experience rejections without a good reason.

Meanwhile refugees fleeing war, hardship and persecution are increasingly demonised and persecuted. Many asylum seekers remain stuck on bridging visas and other temporary visas for many years, unable to settle down in the community because they're afraid of being deported without warning.

The Australian government must stop persecuting immigrants, and create an immigration processing system that gives migrants a fair go.

We call on the Australian government to:

  • reduce processing fees for family reunion visas and visitor visas, especially visas for children, partners and aged parents
  • reduce processing times for all visa applications, and provide greater transparency regarding the progress of ongoing applications
  • rectify racist immigration department bias against visa applicants from poorer countries
  • grant permanent visas to asylum seekers who have been stuck on bridging visas and other temporary visas for many years

The government must strongly reject racist narratives that seek to blame immigrants for the consequences of corporate greed and big business profiteering.
